The 21st London battalion arrived in France in March, 1915 and in May became part of 142 Brigade, 47th Division. On 19th April, 1915, they marched from a training ground at Lapugnoy to Rue de l’Epinette where they went into trenches for the rest of the month. Frederick Rand was accidentally killed on 27th April but the battalion diary provides no further information concerning his death.
